Taking your young child into the dentist is often not going to be the easiest thing in the world, and this can be amplified depending on the personality of your child. Most pediatric dentists realize this and try to do everything in their power to make your child feel calm and safe while they are at the dentist. This makes the process go as smoothly as it possibly can and allows everyone involved to have a better experience. This article is going to discuss 3 things that a pediatric dentist does to help your toddler feel comfortable during their dental appointment.
Television And Headphones
A great way to help your child feel more comfortable at the pediatric dentist is to distract them from what is going on within their mouth. A great way that pediatric dentists do this is to have your child watch a movie or a cartoon on the television. However, rather than just having the television play out loud, they have your child wear headphones. This is effective for distracting your child even more because they aren't going to be able to hear the things that the dentist is saying or hear the different sounds that some of the dental instruments are making.
Nitrous Oxide
If your child is getting more than just a routine check-up and cleaning, then the pediatric dentist may recommend that your child receives some nitrous oxide. This is going to help them to feel much more calm than they otherwise would, thus helping them to be more relaxed and care-free during their procedure. This is often used if your child is getting a filling because the drilling, pulling, and use of different instruments on their teeth can often cause a child to become very upset. While in some cases your child may be so distraught that they need to be put under anesthesia, most children are going to be calm enough with the use of nitrous oxide.
A Special Chair For A Parent
Most of the dental exam rooms are also going to include one or more chairs that are specifically put in there for parents to use. Your child is going to feel a lot more calm knowing that you are going to be with them the entire time. Also, if necessary, you can even move the chair right next to your child and hold their hand during the procedure so that they feel even more comfort.
